Macular degeneration, or Age-related macular degeneration (AMD or
ARMD), is a common leading cause of vision loss in people 60 years or
older. It is estimated that approximately 1.4 million Canadians have
age-related macular degeneration.
It happens when a part
of the retina called the macular is damaged. It causes blurred or
reduced central vision, which diminishes your ability to see fine
details. Macular degeneration may first develop in one eye and then
affect both. The vision loss can progress slowly or quickly but does
not affect the peripheral (side) vision.
There are two
types of age-related macular degeneration (AMD):
At this time there is no western medical treatment for dry macular
degeneration. However, if your condition is diagnosed early, you can
take steps to help slow its progression. Studies suggest that a diet
high in fish (omega-3 fatty acids) and vitamin D can reduce the risk of
developing AMD.
For wet AMD, medications can be injected into the eye to prevent
the growth of leaky blood vessels in the eye and coagulation of bleeding
in the eye that may lead to severe vision loss.
The main benefit of TCM is its ability to improve blood circulation to
very specific regions and structures in the body. The blood contains
oxygen, nutrients, hormones and healing agents that support our body
to function optimally. By delivering nutrient-rich blood to the sick
body part, we stimulate the body to heal.
This fundamental
effect applies to the treatment of macular degeneration. Over time,
the cone cells in the macula begin to deteriorate when there is a lack
of oxygen-rich blood nourishing the eye. This results in the
progression to the symptoms of AMD.
Through our
specialized treatments, we are able to stimulate oxygen-rich blood
flow to the back of the eye, thus nourishing the starving cone cells
to restore the health of the macula.
Acupuncture moves nutrient-rich blood to the eyes,
stimulating the body to heal.
Acupuncture treatment for macular degeneration consists of
stimulating specific points on the hands and the feet and points
around the eyes.
It is important to note that the
acupuncture points administered are around the eyes and not into the
eyes. These points are generally close to the eyebrows and temples.
The surrounding points around the eyes support the microcirculation
and enhance the health of retina and macula.
Our treatment strategy also includes increasing the effect by
adding micro current stimulation, which enhances the effect of the
acupuncture.
